Jina AI senior software engineer Johannes Messner is delivering a sold-out presentation at PyCon US 2023 titled “Modern Typed Python for (Multimodal) ML: From Training to Deployment.” The one-hour talk is in Room 251D of the Salt Palace Convention Center at 9:30am CT, April 20. Johannes is a core maintainer of DocArray and Jina, ML engineer at Jina AI, fan of multimodal AI and SSL, enjoyer of good food, and a man of the mountains. He staunchly believes that beautiful code is good code.

In his talk, Johannes will explore the benefits of Python type hints and also show how they are infiltrating the next big domain: machine learning.

The introduction of Johannes’ talk is an overview of typing in Python: its history, utility, and the tooling landscape. The main part of his talk focuses on Python type hints as specific to ML. This second section covers why typing is useful in ML; tensor shapes and multimodal data; getting the most out of ML tools like jaxtyping and DocArray; data organization a keeping track of tensor shapes with type hints;  and how typing-focused libraries can bridge the gap between training and deployment.

Modern Typed Python for (Multimodal) ML: From Training to Deployment” is for anyone who would like to know more about Python type hints that can be helpful in their code base, and is especially well-suited for machine learning practitioners focusing on model training and/or model deployment and serving.

Audience members will leave the talk with three actionable takeaways: an understanding of why Python-type hints are useful; why they’re particularly useful in the ML domain; and how libraries like DocArray can be leveraged in practice.
